What is pediatric pelvic floor therapy?
Pediatric pelvic floor therapy is specialized treatment provided by licensed occupational and physical therapists. The goal is to help children overcome bowel and bladder difficulties and concerns. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and tissues at the bottom of the pelvis that support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. Just like any other muscle group, the pelvic floor can sometimes need a little extra care and attention to work properly. Therapy is designed to address a range of issues that are impacted by the pelvic floor such as bedwetting, constipation, urinary urgency, and incontinence. At OWN Your Pelvic Health, we take a holistic approach when it comes to your child’s pelvic health. We understand that the development of your child is a multifaceted process and several factors may contribute to their challenges. Therefore, we invest a considerable amount of time in getting to know your child as a person and develop our treatment plan based on their strengths and individual needs.
Common pediatric pelvic floor issues we treat:
constipation
withholding of bowels & bladder
bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis)
potty training difficulties
bowel and bladder incontinence
diastasis recti (tummy separation),
encopresis (fecal incontinence),
enuresis (bladder incontinence)
pelvic pain
frequency /urgency of urination
giggle & stress incontinence
overactive bladder
underactive bladder
sensory processing/interoception challenges
toilet refusal
vaginal reflux
What does treatment look like?
We collaborate with your family each step of the way. We take a trauma-informed & play-based approach. Depending on your child’s unique needs, through play & different activities we may address:
strength & coordination
balance
posture & alignment
sensory processing
primitive reflex testing & integration
breathing & airway
nervous system regulation
habits & routines
toileting mechanics
pelvic floor or “potty muscles” relaxation & strengthening
Other techniques we utilize include:
soft tissue mobilization & abdominal work
myofascial release
biofeedback
individualized home programs
Unlike adult-based pelvic floor therapy, which involves intra-vaginal or intra-rectal assessment and treatment, pediatric therapy does not. However, with the consent of both the child and parent, we may perform an external examination of the pelvic floor muscles to ensure they are functioning properly. This is something your therapist would talk to you much more about!
